Testing of our new robot at Swiss Canopy Crane II

As part of his Master's thesis Gian-Andri Morf tested his robot on a 50 meter high crane.

Developing robots for canopy exploration is not an easy task. During the initial stages of development, it is critical to have easy access to tree canopies to test individual components and subsystems. Lucky for us, the University of Basel has established the Swiss Canopy Crane II. A key piece of this infrastructure is a 50 m high crane with a 50 m jib that provides access to 250 tree canopies of 12 different species. From the crane's gondola, Gian-Andri Morf tested his robot's ability to enter and exit tree canopies.
